The usual interference by the USA on behalf of israel. I wonder if they’ll ever be able to stand on their own two feet? The reason for the present Iranian government’s existence, is the previous interference by the USA when they wanted the tame Shah in power, rather than the democratically-elected government who wanted to nationalise their country’s oil. The Shah created a society of the utmost inequality, and the people rebelled against it - which ushered in the chance for the present Islamic system to take over. I fail to see what business it is of the USA, and now they have the ludicrous idea of getting the previous Shah’s son back! As I say, it’s none of their business. Iran adhered to the UN system of inspection of their nuclear sites, and there was never a problem. Israel is the huge problem on that front. This whole repellant situation is being engineered as usual by israel. It’s time that the world stopped this nonsense, forced israel back to its ‘legal borders,’ and pushed them out of every other country. No more zionism, ‘elites, establishments,’ or any of the horror that goes with them.

IT is not correct that this has not been discussed widely -- Robert Reich has written a whole substack column on this on Wednesday, and Foreign Policy contains an article by Ali Hashem that clearly points out that US is on imminent war footing agaisnt Iran. Trump's approval ratings are down; mid terms are looming, even though almost eleven months out; the Venezuela escapade has given him confidence, and Trump has over the past two months (goaded on by Miller et al) become an aggressive agent in global politics, especially with weaker countries. His attitude to Greenalnd should remind all of this.

I can well believe you. My first take was that Owen was referring to the U.K. I am pleased that Starmer is so far denying permission to use air bases.

Thanks for writing this. What the hell does Trump think he's doing, going to war on a foreign country because they don't like his best friend Israel? This is war, killing, destruction, generational damage, grievous harm to hundreds of thousands of people. Iran is a poltical anomaly, with a deeply unpopular and brutal religious government, and a large highly educated intelligent population. The world is a better place for the existence of Iran. Trump will do enormous damage, create even deeper and persistent hate, make an enemy out of the ordinary Iranian population who currently are more our friends. It's worth asking why Trump feels so much anger against Iran. They apparently have done nothing to anger him. If they enrich uranium it is because Trump abandoned the international arms control treaty that was negotiated by Obama before Trump's first presidency. That it was Obama who negotiated on behalf of the USA was of course sufficient for Trump to leave it, an act of utter and blind stupidity. So it was Obama who angered him. Perhaps Trump still carries some memory of the humiliating captivity of the US embassy in Teheran during the collapse of the corrupt and foolish pro-American Pahlavi imperium. He would like to see Pahlavi back. This is no basis for a war.

Two leaders, untrustworthy , mendacious, Trump and Netanyahu facing elections at home which, if as predicted, will curtail their power to act with total impunity. Mid-terms for Trump are likely to flip Senate . Netanyahu needs war to stay in power. American /Israeli assault on Iran has been his long term goal. The 12 day war , a dummy run , had Israeli military calling for US intervention, despite $billions in military hardware, exposed weaknesses in Iron Dome. Ballistic missiles inflicted serious damage in Israel, which heavy censorship underplayed. Hence the insistence of including ballistic missiles in current talks. Both sides, US/Israel - Iran, have better measure of what each is capable of. Trump might use pretext of war to declare State of Emergency to suspend November mid-terms- Netanyahu might do same - War provides a lifeline to their political survival.

Conversely, Trump family lucrative deals in Middle East are put at risk by outbreak of War.

Destructive 'Gazafication' death and destruction of huge swathes of Iran unlikely to sit well with Trump's Board of Peace pronouncement about the region. Wider regional implications for global economies.

What we know is that Pete Hegseth, ' a warrior ' loves playing with military toys at his disposal. Why have them if you can't use them .

Nobody expected Putin to invade Ukraine- but he did. So odds on that War is imminent.
